Network Profile

The Network is located immediately to the North of greater Melbourne and, while it is mostly rural, contains an increasing proportion of 'urban fringe' areas. There are a number of sizeable towns but no major regional centres. There are hospitals located in Kyneton, Castlemaine, Seymour, Bacchus Marsh, Kilmore and Daylesford and a proportion of the population access Melbourne for tertiary care needs and a substantial proportion access accident and emergency services at Northern Health, Western Health and Royal Melbourne Hospital.

There are 42 General Practices located within the Network and 241 GPs. There are 33 general practices located in rural towns. There are 11 practices on the urban fringe. 16 practices are rural GP training practices with Regional Training Providers and there are two Outer-metropolitan training practices with the Victorian Metropolitan Alliance training Practices. There are up to 35-40 GP Registrars training with Regional Training Networks in the Network throughout the year.

One Outer-metropolitan practice provides junior doctor placements for the Pre-vocational GP training Program (PGPPP). Many practices also attract significant numbers of medical students from Melbourne and Monash Universities.
