Continuing Professional Development

The continuing professional development program aims to assist GPs improve the quality of care they provide to patients by supporting, and delivering the highest of standards of care to the community. There is greater emphasis on learner needs by means of various adult learning principles; aimed to improve GP attendances; and plan quality educational activities. It endeavours to provide the best speakers, in addition to, the latest, and most up-to-date, medical program delivery. The CPD education program is well planned and is developed in collaboration with the CPD coordinator, GP reference group and CHGPN Staff. This group convenes once a year to determine future CPD program delivery.

The new Triennium imbues a few changes to the CPD program with Category 1 activities having greater prominence in the 2008 -10. By increasing points from 30 to 40, it results in additional - 6 hour activities (e.g. Alms) throughout the year, with some emphasis on GPs ‘self - recording’ (up to 30 points per year) of Category 2 activities. The recent introduction of the International Classification of Primary Care (ICPC) coding system is now relevant in GP education and learning. It identifies medical areas in which GPs receive education, compares data with the national health priority areas, analyses gaps in education, and ensures GPs partake in activities that will endow them to work in these priority areas in the future.

GP members have access to various support mechanisms from the division, including advice on education delivery. Communication between the education provider and GPs is particularly important when GPs are required to provide feedback on ‘predisposing activities’ and ‘reinforcing activities’ associated with Active Learning Modules or any other Category 1 activity. GPs completing such activities are rewarded with maximum point allocation, which also satisfies the criteria for procedural grants. Rural and remote doctors have in the past six months increased support through the procedural and emergency medicine grants thus providing funds for education in areas such as obstetrics, surgery, anaesthetics and emergency medicine.

We provide assistance by organising:

  • Regular contact with CPD coordinator and staff
  • A variety of education events, workshops and conferences ( a number are combined with pharmacists and Practice Nurses)
